Ex-fighters held over 'drug party'

Former boxing champion Samart Payakarun and former Muay Thai fighter Charin "Deisel Noi Chor Thanasukarn" Sorndee were arrested along with seven others at an alleged drug party in Samut Prakan's Bang Phli district yesterday.

Following a tip-off that a "famous boxer" had organised a drug party, Pol Maj-General Wimol Pao-In, commander of the Juvenile and Women's Division, yesterday morning led a police raid to a suite at the Bang Phli Palace Hotel.

They found six men including Samart, 45, and Charin, 46, and three women having a drink plus equipment for taking "Ice" (crystal methamphetamine hydrochloride). Urine tests found none had taken drugs.

A body search, however, found 0.15 grams of marijuana in Samart's pocket. He was charged with having in possession a category 5 narcotic with intent to consume.

Another partygoer, Sumeth Rojanapa, 40, was found to have a bag of "Ice" and a set of drug-taking tools. He was charged with having a category I narcotic with intent to consume.

Another man, Pornsith Jarukittikul, 38, was found with three "five five" nerve-suppression tablets and charged with having a category 2 psychotropic substance with intent to consume.

The three reportedly confessed and were taken to Bang Phli police station.

Later, Samart's relatives bailed him out with Bt50,000 cash.

Samart then told reporters he did not organise a drug party. His old friend Charin asked him to meet at the hotel before going to a Pak Nam pub along with Charin's other friends.

They went back to the hotel at 2am and were drinking when police arrived.
