Suda gets a lone gold in Prague

[WEIGHTLIFTING] Suda Chaleephay has failed to live up to expectations in the World Junior Weightlifting Championships in Prague.

The youngster grabbed only a gold medal in the women's 53kg division on Monday night.

Suda, who won three medals including two gold in the previous edition in China, was the hot favourite for a clean sweep of the three gold medals in the category. However, she could not make it this time as her three attempts to lift 90kg in the snatch failed.

China's Yang Dewan captured the gold with a lift of 95kg, while another Thai Maneewan Amnuaiporn and Colombian Jackelina Heredia took silver and bronze by lifting 84kg and 81kg respectively.

Suda came back strongly in the clean and jerk category where she toppled all her challengers with a powerful lift of 111kg. Yang and Maneewan lifted an identical 110kg in the discipline, but the Thai took home the silver due to her lighter body weight. Yang had to be content with a bronze.

Since Suda's performance in the clean and jerk could not be counted for the Olympic Total, Yang, Maneewan and Heredia battled it out for the gold. As expected, the Chinese lifter won her second gold with an aggregate of 205kg, while Maneewan and the Colombian, who had lifted 194kg and 188kg, clinched silver and bronze medals respectively.

"I really don't know what was wrong with me. I could not lift 90kg yesterday though I had lifted similar weight during practise sessions," said the 20-year-old Suda.

"I wasn't under any pressure. I thought I could lift it comfortably. I grabbed the bar confidently and told myself that it wasn't heavy. I tried to snatch the weight, but I just couldn't. It's a pity I could not bring home three gold medals. Perhaps the diet has something to do with it," she said.

In the men's 62kg category, Thai Chinnarat Kaeorak finished a disappointing seventh. Chinese Liu Xin snatched the gold with the lift of 137kg, with compatriot Zhang Jie claiming the clean and jerk and the Olympic Total gold with lifts of 170kg and 306kg respectively.
