Checks to block protesters

Police, soldiers and security officers in the North and Northeast will block protesters planning to join an anti-coup rally at Sanam Luang following the Assets Examination Committee's freezing of deposed premier Thaksin Shinawatra's financial assets.

Provincial police and military personnel in Nakhon Ratchasima have set up checkpoints to block protestors after receiving reports that many provincial people travelled to Sanam Luang on Monday night after news of the AEC decision.

The checkpoints have been set up on main roads in Nakhon Ratchasima to stop protesters from going to Bangkok.

Security personnel were ready to move from their bases to Bangkok if tensions at the rally turn violent.

Nakhon Sawan governor Chanin Buaprasert yesterday had discussions with security officials seeking ways to block people from going to join the anti-coup rally.

They are also checking the movement of politicians and have ordered local offi-cials to explain to residents why the AEC froze Thaksin's assets.

About 200 passenger vans that run from Bangkok to Nakhon Sawan have been cancelled because of fears they will be used to transport people to the pro-Thaksin protests in Bangkok.
