Large sum wanted for poor kids

Cabinet is expected to asked to approve a large budget today for scholarships for children of low-income families, plus people who do good for society, and state education authorities.

A total of Bt5.66 billion has been requested for two lots of scholarships - 309,788 and 290,122 - which would be granted to students whose parents are poor.

Another Bt785 million has been sought by the Social Development and Human Security Ministry for 79,330 scholarships for children of people categorised as doing good for society.

A separate request for Bt3.74 billion for textbooks and other funding for students in all state schools will be submitted by the Social Development and Human Security Ministry and the Education Ministry.

Of the Bt3.74 billion, Bt1.62 billion would be given to the 40 per cent of primary school students classed as 'needy', at a rate of Bt1,000 per head.

And Bt2.12 billion would go to the 30 per cent of students in lower high-school classed as needy, at a rate of Bt3,000 per head.

All the funds, if approved, will be distributed in 2008.
