Suphan Buri against bill

Suphan Buri politicians will write to Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont this week demanding the Community Organisation Council bill be scrapped.

Tambon Administration Councils of Suphan Buri president Jariya Pothisuthon said yesterday the bill would make local bodies "redundant" by forming separate ones to plan and oversee community development.

"If the bill passes it will create confusion and conflict at the grassroots level all over the country," Jariya asserted.

"We already have tambon administration councils to do the job. Why should the government set up another body to compete with existing ones?" he asked.

The Social Development and Human Security Ministry drafted the bill. It has been opposed by Interior Minister Aree Wongsearaya.

Human Security Minister Paiboon Wattanasiritham and deputy Poldej Pinpratheep say they will resign if it does not pass.
