Vocational training lagging

The number of students completing compulsory education and entering job training falls short of goals, according to a Community Development Department survey released yesterday.

Of about 19,500 Grade 12 or Mathayom 6 diploma students surveyed nationwide outside Bangkok this year, 12,770 entered job training, department deputy director-general Jaruphong Pholladej said.

The number not receiving further training is too high, he said.

This figure is the worst in 42 categories for which the department keeps records detailing quality of life. The records are called the National Essential Database.

The statistics reveal the country is meeting targets in just 17 of the categories, Jaruphong said.

Most of the other 25 "narrowly missed the criteria", meaning the overall quality-of-life index is "regarded as satisfactory".

The annual survey found 355,900 households of 7,743,330 surveyed in all 75 provinces outside the capital have monthly incomes exceeding Bt23,000.

The database is used by a government panel comprising permanent secretaries of all ministries to formulate future-development plans.
