Friend of the poor

Thousands of people from all walks of life - villagers to former prime ministers, activists to academics - attend the cremation of 'People's Warrior' Suwit Watnoo at Samakkhi Banpot Temple in Chon Buri's Sattahip district yesterday.

Suwit passed away at the age of 54 on March 12 after suffering a heart attack. Throughout his life, Suwit worked for the poor, particularly the homeless. He assumed top positions in several high-profile organisations that championed civil rights, including the Human Settlement Foundation, Campaign for Popular Democracy, Assembly of the Poor, Provincial Slum Network and October's People Network. Among those attending the ceremony was former premier Anand Panyarachun.
