Sang Som fail badly

[VOLLEYBALL] Thailand's Sang Som failed to make a big mark in the Asian Men's Club Volleyball Championship in Manama, Bahrain, winning one and losing four matches.
They now take on Burma for places from 9-12 in the classification round. Sang Som included several national players who won the SEA Games crown in Manila two years ago, but they lost their first match to Japan 1-3 a week ago, then went down tamely in straight sets to the hosts the next day. The Thai team tasted their first victory when they beat Uzbekistan's AGMK 3-1 on Sunday. However, Indonesia's Garuda and Qatar's Al Arabi proved tough for the Thais. Bahrain's Al Najima, Al Arabi and Garuda shared nine points from four wins against one loss in Group A, but due to the better points win/loss ratio, the host side topped the group. Al Arabi came second, with Garuda in third place. Sang Som finished fifth. In Group B, defending champions Paykan from Iran captured the pole position. Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal came second. In the semi-finals yesterday, Al Najima were due to take on Al Hilal, with Paykan going up against Al Arabi.
