CDA wants early referendum

An Election Commission member proposed yesterday that the referendum on the new constitution be held two weeks faster than scheduled - in mid-August - to prevent a possible dispute about when the Constitution Drafting Assembly's time expires.
EC commissioner Prapan Naiyakowit pointed out that there could be legal dispute over the CDA's status because the interim constitution stipulates that the CDA will expire after it completes drafting organic laws or within 45 days after the charter draft has been completed. At the same time, the interim Constitution order number 31 says the CDA will cease to exist once the Constitution goes into effect and the CDA completes drafting organic laws - or whatever comes first. To prevent legal problems, the public referendum should be held on August 19, instead of September 2.
