Rectors seek pay rise

The University President Council of Thailand (UPCT) will seek a pay raise for the employees of privatised universities, council president and Mae Fah Luang University rector Vanchai Sirichana said yesterday.

Following the Cabinet resolution on Tuesday to give a pay raise of four per cent to government workers, both in service and retired starting from October 1, Vanchai said the UPCT had sent a query to the Bureau of Budget asking if the salary hike included university employees in autonomous universities.

Vanchai said they had not received the pay raise that civil servants got on April 1, 2004, and on October 1, 2005, and as a result universities had to find money from other sources to pay them.

He said he would raise the issue with the Education Minister and request a pay hike for the varsity employees from October 1.

Chulalongkorn University's deputy rector, Prof Kua Wongbunsin, who heads the team on university personnel salary issues, said the UPCT would also award a 4-per-cent salary raise for university staff on par with government employees.

He said many universities, especially upcountry, had more lecturers as permanent employees than lecturers as civil servants.
