Infected Thai websites rise

China continues to host the most number of infected websites and Thailand has recorded a significant increase, according to the latest report from UK-based antivirus firm Sophos.

China remains responsible for more than half of the infected sites. The United States trails a distant second at about 30 per cent, followed by Germany, Russia and Thailand.

Thailand has entered the chart for the first time due to the increasing number of infected government sites, according to Sophos.

Sophos is warning network administrators to improve security measures to avoid strains on their IT infrastructure.

"Many trojans and viruses are specifically designed to attack web-related files - such as HTML, ASP, JS and VBS - so that an internal infection on an organisation's web server might affect hundreds or even thousands of web files," said Paul Ducklin, head of technology for Sophos Asia-Pacific.

These files may form part of tens or even hundreds of different websites published via the same server. An administrator who makes the mistake of running a single infected program on his server may end up affecting a huge number of external users.
