Aberdeen to be active

Aberdeen Asset Management plans to play a greater role in the management of the companies it has invested in, taking part in more shareholder meetings and exercising its voting rights.
"It's always been part of our operation to do governance analysis before we invest in any company. We've already attended shareholder meetings but we'll communicate more with the companies we've invested in. We'll share our views about what we want to see from the companies in terms of good corporate governance," said Robert Penaloza, CEO of Aberdeen Asset Management (Thailand). Thailand ranked among five other countries in the good governance ratings of the Asia Corporate Governance Association. Peter Taylor, equity fund manager and head of corporate governance for Aberdeen Asia Pacific, said nine out of 10 Asian markets' corporate governance is "good on paper". However, Penaloza said that currently good corporate governance in Thailand was limited. He added that if good corporate governance is increased, Aberdeen Group would consider more investment in the Thai market.
