PTV told to control protesters

The military has warned People's Television (PTV) leaders to control demonstrators in Sanam Luang otherwise the military will be forced to use strict measures, Army Region 1 commander Lt-General Prayuth Chan-ocha said yesterday.
He said it was clear from the PTV rally on May 31 that there were politicians behind the scenes inciting problems, and that many politicians from the defunct Thai Rak Thai Party had attended Saturday's rally. "The PTV organisers had previously said their rallies were not connected with Thai Rak Thai, but today [Saturday] many TRT politicians joined the PTV [organisers] on stage to attack the Council for National Security and the government," he said. PTV on Saturday vowed that the rally would continue every day until the CNS steps down. They said the rallies would continue until June 24, which is the 76th anniversary of the revolution that ended the Siamese Monarchy on June 24, 1932. The Army Region 1 chief said the military had discussed with police, the Bangkok governor and each district chief ways to control mobs at Sanam Luang. He urged the demonstrators to end the rallies as the electoral fraud cases were over and they should accept the verdict. PTV rally organiser Jatuporn Promphan said yesterday's event was peaceful, unlike last Thursday's in which chaos was caused by people who were not PTV supporters. At the rally on Saturday night around the Democracy Monument, about 300 people wearing yellow shirts had gathered to protest the event. "If we found CNS men among those trying to disturb our rally we would take them to the CNS. If we found they were Bangkok city people we would take them to the Bangkok governor, and if some of them were People's Alliance for Democracy men we would take them to Ban Phra Arthit, PAD leader Sondhi Limthongkul's office," Jatuporn said. About 3,000 people attended the rally. PAD coodinator Suriyasai Katasila yesterday denied anyone from his group were behind the yellow-shirt demonstrators.
