China quake jolts Thais

Two people were killed and more than 200 injured by an earthquake that hit China's Yunnan province before dawn yesterday.

The epicentre of the 6.1-6.4 magnitude quake was about 300 kilometres north of Chiang Rai's Chiang Saen district.

No damage or casualties were reported in Thailand, according to Smith Thammasaroj, adviser to Information and Communication Technology Minister Sitthichai Pookaiyaudom.

Smith said the earthquake occurred at 4.35am and was followed by two or three aftershocks.

Several smaller earthquakes have been reported in areas where fault lines have appeared in Thailand in recent years, said Smith.

In response to the government's concern about possible natural disasters, he said, the National Earthquake Committee of Thailand will hold its first meeting on Thursday.

The meeting will be chaired by Sitthichai.
