Muslim protest in Pattani mosque ends

Thousands of protesters at a mosque in Pattani agreed on Monday to end their protest after the army agreed to set up an independent panel to investigate into thier alleged soldiers' assaults on Muslims.

The protesters that started the protest on Friday left the site at about 11am. Pattani authorities provided vehicles to transport them to their home.

They ended the protest after Fourth Army Region Lt Gen Wirote Buajaroon signed an order to establish the committee.

Shops near the Pattani mosque resumed their business.

Tuvaedaniya Tuvaemaengae, protest leader, said that Ramkamhaeng university students decided to join the protest because they followed up the situation in the deep south and learnt about the authorities' assaults on local people.

He also defended the students who joined the protest and hid their faces with scarf, saying that they were concerned about their safety.
