Extreme TB

Three foreigners at a refugee camp have been quarantined after they were found to have extreme drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB), Disease Control Department director-general Thawat Suntrajarn said yesterday.

Thawat said there was currently no treatment for this strain of TB.

XDT-DB has recently become major news after a law unused for 44 years was invoked to isolate a man in the United States last month.

"The last time this law was invoked was for a smallpox patient," Thawat said.

He confirmed there were no cases of Thais having been infected with XDR-TB.

Thawat said it remained unclear whether TB vaccination would be able to prevent XDR-TB infection. - the Nation
