Phayao retailers protest Tesco Lotus superstore plan

Small retailers in Phayao gathered yesterday to protest against Tesco Lotus's plan to open a superstore in Chiang Kham district.
Chaiyaporn Wongsathapornchai, chief of the traders' group, said retailers had recently formed a committee to campaign against foreign giants. The panel recently submitted a petition to the National Legislative Assembly. It asked whether Phayao's city plan, imposed on May 18, would have a retroactive effect on Tesco Lotus's investment. "Our group is strong as we share the belief that foreigners' expansion would benefit only contractors. Moreover, we consider the approval process for the expansion was not transparent," Chaiyaporn said. - The Nation.
