Supoj defies odds to capture 3rd title

[SNOOKER] Supoj Saenla had Lady Luck on his side once again as he won the CAT Telecom-Suphan Buri Thailand Classic 2007 crown, his third major title in less than a year, late on Saturday night.
It became pretty obvious at the start of the final against Thailand No 1 Issara Kachaiwong at the Khum Suphan Hotel that Supoj would dominate the proceedings, and the trend never changed as the showdown ended 5-1 in Supoj's favour. Both Supoj, a Chiang Mai native, who won the same tournament here last year, and the 2006 National Games singles gold medal, and Issara had been in splendid form throughout the tournament. Supoj defeated Ratchapol Pu-Ob-Orm 5-3 in the semi-finals on Friday, while his rival demolished some formidable opponents on his way to the final. Issara was touted as the title favourite, but it was Supoj, who came out firing on all cylinders. Supoj, ranked No 3 in Thailand and due to represent the Kingdom at the 2007 Asian Championship in Karachi next month, needed only two trips to the table to capture the first frame. Issara took the second frame with a 46-point run, but that proved to be his only moment in the limelight on Saturday night. Supoj then potted breaks of 55 and 88 to go up 4-1 before brief runs of 36, 28 and 20, giving Issara no chance to recover. Supoj said: "To whoever I spoke to today thought that Issara would win the final ... I am glad that they all felt that way as it relieved me all the pressure. I just played my own game without bothering too much about my rival. We are very good friends, and we have been sharing the same room since the start of the tournament. He was a bit unlucky tonight. He had the opportunities to put up a decent fight, but the balls never favoured him." The final stages of the third ranking tournament of season - the CAT Telecom-Saraburi Thailand Open - will be played at the Sara Buri Provincial Administration Organisation Hall on June 10-16. The three foreign wildcards invited to take part in the Sara Buri tournament are world No 24 Michael Holt, and No 55 David Roe, both from England, and talented Chinese star Liang Wenbo, ranked No 66 in the world.
