Public want Tribunal's verdicts to be respected

Most people oppose plans by interest groups to protest against the Constitution Tribunal's rulings on electoral fraud cases on Wednesday, which could see major political parties dissolved, according to a poll released yesterday.

Abac Poll director Noppadon Kannika said 74.9 per cent of the 3,554 respondents from 18 provinces opposed calls to protest following the court rulings because they want the country to move on.

They want all sides to respect the verdicts and the rule of law, he said.

Most want the general election to be held this year and one-quarter want it held next year, he said.

The survey, conducted last week, found minimal support for protests against party dissolution. Only 12.8 per cent of those surveyed supported the right to protest the Constitution Tribunal's verdicts.

Asked how dissolution would affect a party's popularity, 77.1 per cent said it would cause it to drop, 11.1 per cent said it would have no effect and 3.7 per cent thought it would provide a boost.
