Pro-Thaksin websites shut down ahead of May 30 ruling

The Information and Commu-nications Technology Ministry has shut down as many as 17 websites for their support of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra following the September 19 coup.

Access to hi-thaksin.org has been denied following Thaksin's legal representative in Thailand, Noppadon Pattama, saying he would post a video of his client's latest speech on the site.

Similar action has been taken against saturdayvoice.no-ip.info for reporting the deposed leader's movements.

Among other sites established by Thaksin supporters to be blocked are rakchat.org, saturdaylive.org, dday5450.org and saturdaycenter.com.

Executives of a banned satellite TV station set up by former members of Thaksin's Thai Rak Thai party yesterday said they would ask students of Ramkhamhaeng University to act as security guards at a rally they plan to hold on Thursday.

PTV executive committee deputy chairman Jatuporn Promphan said the station would enlist some 500 students to keep order at the Royal Plaza, the rally venue.

Jatuporn said the rally would remain peaceful if the Council for National Security refrained from deploying people "to create disturbances".

Another executive, Jakrapob Penkair, said the rally had nothing to do with Constitution Tribunal's rulings on electoral-fraud cases against the Thai Rak Thai, Democrat and three smaller parties.

After the rally, the organisers will submit a letter to His Majesty the King on its views on the current political situation and thanking His Majesty for his recent expressions of concern about possible national unrest, Jakrapob said.

Meanwhile, the Thai Rak Thai and Democrat parties have urged members and supporters to gather at their party headquarters instead of at the Constitution Tribunal for the election-fraud rulings on Wednesday.

Both parties yesterday reiterated pleas for calm ahead of and following the announcement of the verdicts, and said they would accept the rulings.

"No matter what the verdicts our party will do all it can to prevent confrontation that could cause disturbance and hardship to society," said Thai Rak Thai acting leader Chaturon Chaisang.

He called on supporters to avoid the court because of the limited public space.

"I don't want supporters to cause trouble for the police and they should not upset the concentration of judges and representatives of political parties," Chaturon said.

The Thai Rak Thai is organising refreshments and an area for supporters outside its new headquarters.

Chaturon will meet party executives and former members of Parliament on the evening of the rulings and an announcement about the party's future will be made in a bid to avert unrest.

Democrat spokesman Ong-art Klampaiboon agreed supporters should avoid the court.

"You don't have to go to the court to support party executives. The party understands your feelings well. If you want to take part but don't want to watch it on television, come to the party's head office," he said.

Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva and party executives will pay homage at the statue of King Rama VII at Parliament on Wednesday morning before going to the Constitution Court.
