Thai canines are top dogs at Cannes Film Festval

Keng and Peak, two canine stars from the Thai film "Ma Ma Si Kha Khrap" (retitled in English as "Mid Road Gang"), have been named winners of the "Palm Dog" award at the 60th-anniversary Cannes Film Festival in France.

Directors Pantham Thongsung and Somkiet Withuranit received the award on behalf of the two dogs at Cannes yesterday, two days before the end of the festival.

Keng and Peak are the first Thai dogs to receive the award since it was introduced in 2001. Last year, Mops from "Marie Antoinette" received the award.

The Palm Dog is an informal award at the Cannes festival. Members of the international press, including journalists from The Times, The Guardian and Heat magazine, sit on a jury to honour the best canines in the year's films.

Based on the picture book "Kaeng Khang Thanon" ("Roadside Gang"), the film follows a canine gang in a story about harmony and friendship.

The adorable behaviour of Keng and Peak during a temple scene in which they stand on two legs to hide from their enemies won the hearts of the judges.
