PUBLIC REACTIONS
Readers sad that illegal acts could kill big parties

The following opinions were posted on The Nation's website ahead of verdicts due next week on the electoral fraud cases Five days before Judgement Day and the fate of the two major political parties, Thai Rak Thai and the Democrats, hangs in the balance. At The Nation's website, people put their views as they hold their breath over the court's ruling next week.

"Concerned" logged on with some sharp comments: "The way I see it, both parties are going to be dissolved. Not due to any legal issues, but mainly because of political (or military) pressure. Those parties' executives will have to be banned for five years in order to give the military and the old useless clique five years to weaken the system, be corrupt, monopolise power and control our daily lives.

"With over 200 executive party members facing disqualification, there's simply no one left that we can vote for. Thus we will have clowns and the useless old guard in Parliament without having much influence.

"This is what the military and the old rich families want. They don't want us to have an open society or a democratic system, as that will simply weaken their influence.

"Looking back into Thai history, 200-300 years back, history repeats itself. Same old game but different players. And we Thais have to pay for that."

"Free Thai" said: "If someone had been murdered in a village, do you kill the whole village? Dissolving the parties makes no sense. It increases tensions and prepares for the takeover of power by the military. And the political parties should be careful (and signs are there) to put aside their rivalry and see the real enemy. But in good Buddhist tradition I believe in a good ending: TRT and the Democrats stand together and avoid the clock being turned back to the good old times."

"Rakbkk" said: "By dissolving both, or either of them, millions of voters/supporters wishes would be nullified. People who voted (or abstained in the case of the Democrats) for these parties would be marginalised. We should not forget that it is not always that we vote for a central ideology of a party, or its chief, we also vote for a local representative. Even if a party is held responsible for the wrongdoing of certain individuals, it doesn't mean that all their elected representatives are criminals!

"In a democracy, majority rules, and a bunch of gunmen should never be allowed to dictate the masses' wishes. Any action against the wish of the majority is the most serious crime in a democracy."

"Neither pro nor anti" said: "No party must be dissolved. Why should the party be dissolved just because of one or two guilty persons? If the party is manipulated by any one person then that person must face the consequence of the law. It is not the party that breaks the law but the individuals. Likewise would you close or shut down any company if one of the directors or one of the management staff broke the law. Also, should the country or province be penalised just because the PM or leadership breaks the rules."

"Babababor" said: "The sad thing is that if either or both parties are dissolved, the scumbag members of the respective parties will still be there at the next election wearing new hats. Where were most TRT politicians 10 years ago? They move around and follow the money.

"Thailand will never have a normal government that does things correctly and for the majority of the people while corruption within the system is so rampant.

"Banning parties will change nothing. Tackle vote buying vigorously, bring in meaningful penalties for the canvassers, candidates and the villagers who receive money, and Thailand might have a chance for a better future."

Many expressed their expectation of seeing the dissolution of the two parties.

"A Southerner" said: "If Thailand is hoping to have a better and cleaner political system, both Thai Rak Thai and the Democrats should be dissolved and their members should be suspended from politics for at least five years as stated in the law. Otherwise there will be no more fair elections in this country! And there will be more scandals like this and Thailand will be carry such a bad name into the future for a long long time!"

Some people want TRT dissolved. "John" said:

"Overwhelming evidence already indicates that TRT was breaking the election laws, therefore the party should be dissolved. If they are not banned, it will indicate that the justice system in this country is not working. TRT can do no wrong even with all the evidence there. The Democrats are falling into the trap set by TRT to prove the other side also broke the law too."

But "Steven" argued: "Tell me why TRT should be dissolved instead of the Democrats? Firstly it was the Democrats that boycotted the election. By boycotting the election they set a precedent for others not to join the election process. They have violated the rules of the Election Commission.

"Not only that, by boycotting the election they have created instability and denied people a choice and rights under the constitution. They have not adhered to the constitution and they could be considered disloyal to the people, country and King.

"For three reasons the Democrats should be dissolved. Frankly, the likelihood of TRT being dissolved is higher. That is because the Democrats are in cahoots with the CNS, and the CNS are just pinpointing any which way to get TRT dissolved."

"Think Twice" said: "There is always good and evil; the good always trying to protect you from evil. They never get rewarded for doing it; they do it because they think it is right. But the good always die because ignorant people never understand. In a crowd of 10 people, how many do you think are good? I would say 2 out of 10 good people are hard to find. The Democrats tried to expose TRT's bad deed and by doing so they got set-up by a traitor. The Democrats didn't try to set up TRT - TRT was doing that to themselves already. TRT was set up to fool you people. The coup was to bring moral people into politics, but where is the morality? TRT is bad. It couldn't care less if it is dissolved. They already stole your money and have nothing to lose. On the other hand, you may also destroy a good party that is trying to protect people's interests. In the end, evil will still win. They will have the last laugh because of stupid people who made a stupid choice. Life's a bitch, isn't it?!"
