Six die in southern violence

Militants killed five people and injured 10 soldiers and police in separate gun and bombs attacks while police killed one militant yesterday in southernmost Yala province.

The first attack came at about 6am in the Yaha district as four members of a family were shot dead in a hut on a rubber plantation.

They were Mauseng Jehloh, the 56-year-old father, Nurhayadi Jehloh, his 21-year-old daughter, along with his nephews Kuseng Tuankohseng and Tuwaeasuming Tuankohseng.

An hour later, a group of six rangers were injured in a bomb attack while on patrol in Yaha district on the Yaha-Patae road.

In the afternoon, a group of police on their way to inspect the scene where the four people were murdered were also hit by a roadside bomb. Four officers were slightly injured. They then found and shot dead the bomber, who had been hiding nearby.

At around 7am in Muang district, Paijit Thongchua, a municipal staff member, was shot dead while riding his motorbike to work.
