Ministers to prepare for NLA debate

A man looks at a copy of a Cabinet report on achievements after six months in office. PM Surayud Chulanont is due to report on the government’s efforts to the National Legislative Assembly tomorrow.
Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont yesterday told the Cabinet to prepare for the government's declaration of its accomplishments in its six months in office.

The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) would debate the accomplishments tomorrow, and it would do so freely, Surayud said.

He told yesterday's Cabinet meeting, attended by Council for National Security chief General Sonthi Boonyaratglin, that ministers should be ready with necessary information in case NLA members want to discuss any points that relate to their portfolios.

However, Surayud said he would report the government's accomplishments in general and the NLA members are likely to focus on his accomplishments as the prime minister.

The NLA might focus on government progress on the four reasons behind the military coup in September. Moreover, economic, social and some abstract issues like morality might be brought up, Surayud said.

The debate will be broadcast live throughout the day, he said.

Surayud said he had not considered replacing PM's Office Minister Prasith Kowilaikul who resigned on Monday, citing health problems.

The PM's Office had already submitted a report of the government's accomplishments in the past six months to the NLA. The report included the general situation before the government was appointed, the government's progress, and its plans for the next six months.
