Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin wants to "rehabilitate" the environment in the commercial areas of Sathorn, Narathiwat and Ratchanakharin.
Apirak said the city's transport department would evaluate these areas.Survey findings would be used to develop "comprehensive environmental rehabilitation" projects. The committee formulating the plan will include representatives from the Energy and National Re-sources and Environment ministries. The plan will be submitted to the World Bank carbon finance programme that offers assistance to projects that successfully reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It will include transport, town planning and environmental-protection campaigns. Apirak said the city administration would extend Skytrain routes and launch Bus Rapid Transit services, neither of which directly emits carbon. "We will rehabilitate the environment in commercial zones and we will campaign for the environment on the ninth day of every month," he said. Trees would be planted along roads and outside buildings, Skytrain and subway stations. "If it is successful we will develop similar plans for other areas with air-pollution problems such as areas on Sukhumvit and Yaowarat roads."
