Bt2.9 billion to keep Phuket island clean

The Pollution Control Department will spend Bt2.9 billion on a four-year plan to reduce refuse and manage wastewater on Phuket, its deputy director-general said yesterday.

The plan will start next year and run till 2011, Wichian Jungrung-reung told a workshop at the Phuket Merlin Hotel. The meeting was attended by administration organisations and related sectors to gather feedback on the plan.

Phuket Island was declared a pollution-free zone in September 1992 under the Enhancement and Conservation of National Environmental Quality Act 1992. A pollution-control plan was implemented for 1993 to 1999.

Wichian said the Bt2.9-billion plan would involve prevention measures, rehabilitation and a public-awareness campaign that would take Phuket's current development into consideration.

Rubbish and wastewater will be key priorities of the plan.

Wichian said Phuket's rising population and growing number of visitors meant solving rubbish and wastewater problems - especially at beachside tourist attractions and communities - would be a challenge.
