Teacher jailed for 9 years for molesting girl

Nakhon Si Thammarat - The Nakhon Si Thammarat Provincial Court yesterday sen¬tenced a "National Best Teacher 2005" to nine years in prison for molesting a Prathom 5 student, while the girl's father tearfully announced that justice had finally been served after three years of tremendous pressure.

The court said that Amporn Suriya, a performance art teacher at a wellknown primary school in Muang Nakhon Si Thammarat, was guilty as charged for luring a minor under 15 for lewd acts and molesting her.

Upon hearing the verdict, the defendant went pale and was escorted to the court's detention room, while his relatives prepared to apply for his bail release and take the case to the Appeal Court.

The lawsuit stated that in January 2005 Amporn took the then 10-year-old fifth grader to his house and molested her.

When they discovered from their daughter what was going on, the parents filed a police compliant against the award winning teacher.

The public prosecutor finally filed a lawsuit in 2006.

The girl's father tearfully said he and his family were pleased with the sentence.

"The judgement assures us that there is still justice in society. This can help many girls who have been treated like my daughter," he said.

The father said that following the molestation, his daughter still had to continue her studies at the same school where she faced her attacker on a daily basis and came under great pressure from the teacher.

The teacher also told her friends that she was a "bad girl".

The 13-year-old girl is now studying at Mathayom 2 level at another school.

The father said he was also a target of "verbal malice" throughout the past three years, and he planned to sue everyone who had given faulty testimony to assist the teacher.
