Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont yesterday ruled out the possibility of another coup, saying he believed there was no time bomb that could cause a "political accident".
Defence Minister General Boonrawd Somtas commented last week that there could be a coup if political confrontations descended into violence.Surayud said he had met Boonrawd on Sunday but the defence minister did not say anything about the possibility of a coup. The prime minister said that although he hoped the next general election could be organised earlier than the tentative schedule of either Dec 16 or 23, an earlier poll may not be possible. Asked if the government had any plans for possible political trouble with the Constitution Tribunal ruling on the party dissolution case scheduled for next Wednesday, Surayud said that he did not believe there would be political turmoil. He has assigned his deputy Kosit Panpiemras to oversee the administration, as he would be on an overseas trip at that time. Surayud said the government did not need to check the source of money that deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra may use to buy Manchester City Football Club, as the Bank of Thailand would be directly responsible for the matter.
