40% expect poll in 2007

More people expect an election this year than do not, but one in every three has no opinion, according to a poll.

The Abac Poll Research Centre found 39.8 per cent of the country thinks there will be an election this year compared with 31.6 per cent that thinks there will be none. The remainder gave no comment.

Premier Surayud Chula-nont said recently it was likely the next election would be held earlier than expected. It had been expected in December or early next year.

The poll found 58.6 per cent of respondents wanted the Surayud Chulanont government to continue in office while 14.9 per cent said it should resign. There was 26.5 per cent with no opinion.

The relationship between Surayud and Council for National Security chairman Sonthi Boonyaratglin has improved in the past 30 days, according to 9 per cent.

But 17.4 per cent said it had soured, 51.1 per cent said it remained as good as before and 22 per cent said it was as bad as before.

The survey was conducted in 24 provinces among 4,525 respondents between May 10 and May 19.
