Science students wanted

The Education Ministry is seeking Bt12 billion in scholarship funding to encourage sciences, humanities and social sciences graduates.

The Cabinet will consider the request tomorrow.

Half of the money will fund the education of as many as 1,600 students in science disciplines up to doctorate level over the next 16 years.

The ministry wanted scholarships for 2,400 students but a Cabinet committee halved the number.

The government wants more science graduates to meet demand in the public and private sectors.

Another 1,050 scholarships in humanities and social sciences are being sought between 2008 and 2021.

In addition, the ministry is asking for Bt2.7 billion for Grade 1 to Grade 8 textbooks and materials for Thai and English-language studies, mathematics, social studies and sciences for next school year.

Another Bt3.7 billion is sought for 2008 subsidies for uniforms, lunches and transport.
