The Italian in Bangkok

Hidden in many of the capital's monuments and palaces is the evidence of a century of cultural ties with Italy
When Italian professor Paolo Piazzardi first landed in Thailand in 1992 he sensed something hidden in the streets of the city he had stepped in to.
"I felt something familiar. Something that reminded me of Italy," says Piazzardi, who was later to write the book "Italians at the Court of Siam", published in 1996. He traced the feeling to the buildings around him, and discovered that a large part of the architecture in Bangkok had been "Italianised" by Italian architects and artists during the last century.
