Police in Ayutthaya province yesterday began training gold shop owners to use portable radio transmitters in another effort to counter robbery attempts that have become more rampant.
Fifteen gold shops at Baan Paen Market in Sena district took part in the training programme yesterday and the trainees quickly learned how to fluently use the walky-talkies, Sena deputy police chief Lt-Colonel Sombat Chuchaiya said.Police have asked gold shop owners who want to buy walkie-talkies for use in emergency cases to join a list so that they could help with purchase and registration, he said. "With the radio transmitters, gold shop owners can report robberies to police much more quickly and we can respond promptly," Sombat said. The two-way radios are the latest effort to combat robberies of gold shops after police in many provinces began teaching basic shooting lessons to people in the business. The self-defence programmes were initiated to supplement regular police surveillance after a surge in robbery cases in the past few months. Owners of 20 gold shops in the southern province of Surat Thani joined a shooting class held by Muang district police at Vibhavadi Rangsit Army Camp yesterday. "I have to get myself ready to counter any possible robbery attempt. At least I can fight back once I learn some shooting skills," said one of the participants, Somsak Sae-Lau.
