Developing a global brand

After five decades in operation since Thanpuying Chanut Piyaoui opened its first hotel - the Princess - Dusit Hotels and Resorts now claims to be the flagship of Thai hotel operators.

The group is now led by Chanin Donavanik, son of Chanut. His job is not only keeping the group's standing high among international brands, but also expanding abroad.

"My mother and I discussed many choices for our future three or four years ago and we decided to go overseas, but we had to prepare ourselves first," Chanin said.

The group has completed investing in hardware and expanding its network. It spent Bt2 billion in developing a computer system after working with world-recognised companies, building a new brand - D2 Hotel - and being part of the Global Hotel Alliance, which consists of hotels under seven brands operating 46,000 rooms in 39 countries.

Finding appropriate staff has also been important.

Chanin said one of the most recent tasks was employing a company to set up its new corporate strategies as well as re-branding an overall identity.

The group eventually changed its brand from Dusit Hotels and Resorts to Dusit International. This new brand is likely to be introduced to the public in June. The group will also announce the grouping of hotel categories and a direction for each of the brands.

Chanut resigned last year and invited tycoon banker Chatri Sophonpanich to replace her as chairperson.

Chatri is expected to help the group go overseas, particular to China, as he has strong connections with international businessmen.

"The brand Dusit International will help the group expand properties overseas and will represent a Thai management firm. This is one of the keys to competing with international operators," said Chanin.
