Jon picked to head NGO

Former senator Jon Ungpakorn was elected yesterday as the new chief of the NGO-Coordinating Committee on Rural Development.
More than 70 members of the committee met to vote for a new chairman. They also expressed their opinion about the new constitution, suggesting changes to the first draft. The committee disapproved of multiple-MP constituencies and preferred that the party-list system be maintained and that senators be elected. Members of independent state agencies should be selected from civic groups, the media, professional groups and civil servants, they said. And the charter should stipulate that the government cannot ratify any agreement with any country without approval from the House and public hearings. To bridge the income gap, the constitution must require the government to charge progressive tax rates on property and land, including inheritance. - the nation
