Three in race for Asean post

Three people have been short-listed for the position of Asean secretary-general, a source said yesterday.

The selection panel has picked former foreign minister Surin Pitsuwan, former ambassador to the United Nations Luxana Chandhorn and veteran diplomat Xanaspas Xuto out of 12 applicants, the source said.

The panel is scheduled to interview the three in the middle of next month before it recommends one to the Foreign Ministry, which will submit the nominee's name to Government House.

The recruitment of someone for the Asean post has been open to the public, the first time this has been done for such a key role.

The post of secretary-general revolves among Asean's 10 members, and it is Thailand's turn to replace incumbent Ong Keng Yong from Singapore.
