Port expansion

The Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) will again try to win approval from the Transport Ministry for its plan to expand its container capacity at Bangkok's Klong Toei Port.

After being ordered to review the plan, the authority has given additional reasons why the port needs to expand its capacity.

The PAT wants to increase container-carrying capacity from the current 1 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEU) per year to 1.5 million.

Surapong Rongsirikul, the PAT's director-general for finance and information technology, said that in fact the port was already handling 1.3 million to 1.4 million TEU a year, because it felt unable to refuse customers.
