Judge move wins backing

The Court of Justice supports a proposal in the constitution draft that will reduce by half the number of lower court judges serving as Judicial Commission members.

Saravaud Benchakul, a spokesman for the panel of the Court of Justice, said the panel supported Article 216 of the constitution draft that would cut the number of lower court judges as judicial commission members from four to two. This would solve the anomaly of junior judges being allowed to dictate to senior judges.

The Judicial Commission is tasked with the important role of proposing the annual reshuffle of all judges.

The panel also suggested that the constitution draft stipulate that each level of the judiciary vote to select Judicial Commission candidates.

Suebpong Sripongkul, director-general of the Criminal Court for Southern Bankgok, who opposes the reduction, said over 1,000 judges will gather signatures to oppose the clause. They will meet the National Legislative Assembly chairman, Noranit Setabutra, to discuss their reasons.
