Despite rain showers on the commencement of the school term yesterday, Bangkok's traffic conditions were not too congested and the traffic police performance was satisfactory, the Traffic Division Police commander said.
Pol Maj-General Pramote Pathumwong reported that more than 4,800 traffic police officers, municipal police and local volunteers had performed their duties in a satisfactory manner on the first day of the new term.
Pramote also commended parents on their
orderly driving and route preparation in sending their children to school, resulting in minimal traffic congestion.
The traffic flows were slow and at a standstill on some parts of Sam Sen Road from Thewet intersection to Kiak Kai intersection as several popular schools are located there, police said. Sukhumvit Road, where the Skytrain is being extended, also saw traffic congestion, prompting motorists to use Srinakarin road instead.
Deputy Bangkok governor Wanlop Suwandee, who inspected St Gabriel School on Sam Sen Road, said the lighter congestion was because some city schools had already opened on Monday.
With 23 schools throughout the city known to cause traffic jams, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration dispatched 500 municipal officers to help police facilitate traffic flow, resulting in less congestion, Wanlop said.
He said officials had closely monitored areas with popular schools, including Mater Dei School on Ploenchit Road, Assumption College on Silom Road, Bangkok Christian College on Phaya Thai Road and Rajini School on Sam Sen Road.
