LATE NEWS
Ambitious target for logistics

The government hopes its logistics development plan will cut the country's logistics costs from 19 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) to 10 per cent by 2011. GDP is currently about Bt7 trillion.

Chakramon Phasukvanich, permanent secretary of the Industry Ministry, said yesterday the strategy would build up a network consisting of all modes of transportation for raw material suppliers, manufacturers and consumers to boost their global competitiveness in the long run.

It targets developing a logistics system among industries such as electronics, auto parts, rubber, food and textiles. - The Nation.

The growing industrial sector in Vietnam has prompted Vietnam Chemical (Vinachem) and Thai Plastic and Chemicals to form a joint venture for a US$424-million (Bt14.63 billion) chemical complex to be built in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

Vietnam News Agency said the complex was expected to pump out 345,000 tonnes of vinyl chloride monomer, 300,000 tonnes of ethylene dichloride and 250,000 tonnes of chlor alkali annually.

CPF pig plans

Charoen Pokphand Foods suggests the government tackle the pig price crisis by reducing supply.

Virachai Ratanabanchuen, executive vice president of the agri-business conglomerate, said yesterday that the government should play a key role in encouraging breeders to draw up farm management plans particularly for the long term, as one way to avoid more oversupply problems in the future.

However, an urgent measure to shore up prices is to campaign for consumers to eat more pork and pork products. In the medium term, hogs need to be culled by grilling piglets and limiting sows to five litters.

A long-term measure is to set up a "Pig Board" to promote the registration of hog farmers and also to concentrate on research and development. - The Nation.
