Mahajak takes on pirates

Mahajak Development has embarked on a three-year strategic plan to promote its corporate brand and each of its imported audio and consumer electronic products after seeing imitations flood the market.
Kittisak Kanchanachayphoom, general manager for consumer and DJ products, said yesterday that his company wanted to let consumers know how to identify the differences between original and fake products while reminding them of all its brands. It imports some 20 lines including Denon, JBL, Vestex, Crown and Shure from countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom for professional and consumer use at home and in cars. Part of its plan is to use presenters. Popular singer Pakorn "Dome" Lam will promote its Shure microphone systems next month. It also cooperates with brand owners to check shops at random and charge any that sell counterfeit goods. Mahajak experienced a 5-per-cent sales drop during the first quarter, mainly due to the economic slowdown. Kittisak said the decline was mainly from the consumer market, which usually contributes 60 per cent of its total sales. The overall car audio business should expand 5 per cent this year while the home audio business would pick up only 10 per cent, compared to 20 per cent last year, he said. The professional market should continue rolling along at 15 per cent. However, with the marketing plan, the company expects to achieve Bt100 million to Bt150 million in sales for 15-per-cent growth. Yesterday, it brought out the Denon DJ Media Player aimed at high-end consumers. To promote the new product, it will arrange the Denon DJ Asian All Star Championship 2007 featuring DJs from five countries.
