Let's focus on Asean

Thailand should focus more on trading with Asean countries, because the establishment of an Asean Community will create a market of 550 million people with no trade tariffs, a seminar was told yesterday.

Commerce Ministry permanent secretary Karun Kittisataporn said regional integration, due in 2015, would create market opportunities, resources and an Asean brand.

"Four key principles of the Asean Community are to create an alliance, raw material resources, a manufacturing base for the Asean population and a main market," Karun said.

Trade between Asean countries increased from US$10 billion (Bt347 billion) in 1995 to $50 billion last year.
