Two critical after ammonia leak in Bangkok district

A woman and a toddler were in critical condition after ammonia escaped from a frozen-seafood factory in Bangkok's Klong San district yesterday morning.

A food seller identified only as Tharani, 20, and a one-year-old boy, Pasut Bandee, who were close to the Leehahuad factory, were rushed to the nearby Somdej Chaophaya Hospital after feeling faint and suffering irritation in breathing.

Some 300 people living within 500 metres of the factory were evacuated while Tha Dindaeng Road was closed until authorities could control the situation.

Although the leak lasted only 20 minutes, authorities took four hours to disperse all of the gas by spraying water on the factory building.

The cause was still unknown, but police said the discharge came from the factory's cold room.

Deputy Bangkok governor Wallop Suwandee urged all businesses using ammonia and other gases as well as chemical substances to check the conditions of containers and systems to prevent further accidents.
