RSU Healthcare opens 3 new centres

The Ourairat family has re-entered the healthcare business in a big way by opening RSU Healthcare consisting of four medical centres after the family lost control of the Phyathai Hospital in the wake of the 1997 economic crisis.
The first health centre - RSU Dental Centre on Phetchaburi Road - was launched last year, while the three others - Medical Centre, Eye Centre, and Vision and Contact Lens Centre - were launched yesterday on Sukhumvit Road. The three new centres required a Bt200-million investment. Apiwat Ourairat, managing director for business development at RSU Healthcare, said RSU focuses on prevention rather than cure with modern digital medical technologies including medical check-up services and simple treatment methods and easy surgeries. He said the three new centres target three groups: people working in the area, corporate customers such as hotels and insurance companies, and foreign patients. The three centres can cater to 300 to 400 patients per day. He said Thai patients would account for 80 per cent while foreigners would represent the rest during the first year of operation, but he expected the proportion of foreigners would increase to 70 per cent within three years. Apiwat said the company is also conducting a feasibility study on the possibility of conducting a long-stay project for patients who need to take extended rest to recover after receiving medical services. Patients from Korea and the Middle East would be its main targets. The company expects to generate Bt30 million in sales this year and expects the three medical centres to reach break-even point within three years. Meanwhile, the Ourairat family also plans to invest Bt100 million to renovate its Wangtara Hotel in Chachoengsao province. He said they planned to improve and add many new facilities, linking the hotel with RSU's plan to conduct a long-stay project by encouraging patients to take long rests at the hotels.
