Somchai is rallying his Students

[SOCCER] Bangkok University's fate is sealed but Somchai Sabperm is not one to give up easily. The team coach has urged his players to put on a good fight in their remaining fixtures of the Asian Football Confederation [AFC] Champions League.

Today the Students have a tough away match against South Korea's Chunnam Dragons.

Their campaign, which once looked promising following unlikely draws with Korean FA Cup holders Chunnam and J-League runners-up Kawasaki Frontale, took a turn for worse when they were held to a goal-less draw at home by Indonesia's Arema Malang, arguably the weakest opponents in the group. A 1-0 loss in the reverse tie to the Indonesia Cup winners a fortnight ago effectively ended their first journey into the continent's elite club competition.

Although there is nothing left to play for, Somchai sent a clear message that his side would not exit the stage without a fight. The ambitious coach is aiming to register his side's first win in the tournament despite a daunting run to the end of the campaign, with Frontale, who have secured the group's only qualifying spot, coming up next.

"Although we are already out of the competition, I can guarantee that we will not play just to complete the programme. We have not defeated anyone yet. I hope we can do it this time even though it is a very tough test as we are playing in their backyard," Somchai said.

"However, considering the first meeting when we managed to hold them to a draw, I think this Chunnam side is quite ordinary. Although their players are tall and big, they lack agility, particularly the defenders. Our attackers have the pace and will find the holes to score.

"I will field players who are our best and in good physical condition. You can see how seriously we are taking this game from the fact that we went straight to training when we arrived in Korea. Our objective is to take three points back home," said Somchai.

The Students, who are attempting to spring a surprise, received an unexpected favour from the hosts when Shunnam's coach Huh Jung-moo revealed that he would use the match at Gwangyang Football stadium to give valuable experience to younger members of his squad.

Defenders Kim Jin-kyu and Kim Chi-woo are among a group of first-choice players expected to be rested for the match.

"Many of our usual starting eleven players will be rested for the game against Bangkok University. From now we will concentrate on the K-League," said Huh.
