Dog causes 9-car smash

A stray dog loose on a Bangkok expressway yesterday caused a road accident involving nine cars during heavy morning traffic when policemen tried to catch it, leading to congestion all day long.
The grey local breed of unknown sex managed to flee a well-orchestrated attempt by police and workers to net it.After it panicked and ran down the Port Authority of Thailand exit and disappeared, it left a chaotic scene and frustration among motorists, who later became aware of the cause of the accidents through traffic radio stations. The operation to net the dog began at 6.45am after 19 motorists made emergency calls to the Expressway and Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand reporting that the dog was on traffic lanes. The accident took place on inbound lanes at the Artnarong curve when the dog cut across a group of cars, which slammed into each other as they took evasive action. Nine cars were damaged but no casualties occurred. Initially, traffic was only slightly disrupted but six hours of heavy congestion started at 8am when more and more cars used the expressway. The traffic jam stretched from the scene of the accident to the Bang Na exit and further down the inbound lanes of Sukhumvit Road, starting from Poochao Samingphrai intersection in Samut Prakan province.
