Duenpen lifts Thais

[VOLLEYBALL] Dazzling Duenpen Areelua scored 17 points to help Thailand pick up their first victory over India in the 6th Asian Youth Girls Volleyball Championship at the Chakangrao Gymnasium yesterday.
Thailand trounced the Indian side 25-20 25-19 25-15 with an all-out attacking game. Whenever Duenpen turned up at the net with her hard smashes, the points flowed for Thailand. Sontaya Kaewbandit and Phingphit Sankaew proved valuable for the home team. "Our performance was below par because the girls are new to international competition. They were anxious and it obviously reflected on the spiking," said Thai head coach Tanasak Ratanarasi. "Receiving and blocking are two of our main problems. I think they should be composed," he said. Meanwhile, South Korea recovered from an unsteady start to stun former champions China 31-29 22-25 25-11 25-20. Sri Lanka also enjoyed their first victory over Australia with a stunning 25-20 18-25 25-23 25-21 win, while Japan were to take on Taiwan in another match later yesterday. Today Thailand will play their second match against Japan, while India face China. Taiwan take on Sri Lanka and South Korea play Australia.
