A law student sentenced to five years in jail over his girlfriend's death

A law student was sentenced to five years and one month in jail on Tuesday for his involvement in the suspicious death of his girlfriend, who plunged to her death from a six-storey Bangkok apartment in March last year.
Chalermphol Pharmwong, a Kasem Bundit University junior, was convicted of assault resulting in the death of Kanokwan Palakawong na Ayutthaya.Evidence found in their room at Nirand Condominium in Prawet district indicated a physical fight between the two. Public prosecutors did not press a murder charge against Chalermphol on the police's recommendation, as there was no evidence linking him with how Kanokwan plunged to her death from their room's balcony. In his defence testimony, Chalermphol said he loved Kanokwan and had openly dated her for many years, despite his parents' disapproval of their relationship, as Kanokwan was a divorcee with a child. The defendant said he and Kanokwan had a quarrel after she refused to have sex. As he prepared to smoke marijuana, Kanokwan moved to another part of the room and he later heard the sound of a large object hitting the ground. A charge of possession of marijuana against Chalermphol was dropped. The Nation
