Doi Kham moves into health foods

To tap into the current strong trend in health foods, Doi Kham Food Products, operator of the Doi Kham Royal Project, plans to use agricultural raw materials from the North to develop new health products.
Doi Kham president Prachit Kambhu na Ayudhaya said her company currently had 30 hilltribe groups supplying fruit and vegetables as raw materials for the project. She said buying raw materials from the hilltribes was part of its social-benefit strategy and that the company would emphasise producing new processed products from fruits and vegetables. The company manufactures about 50 products selling in the domestic market through four channels: its own outlets, modern retail stores, direct sales (through Amway) and traditional shops. She admitted the company could not compete by offering products at very cheap prices, because of the difficulty in managing manufacturing and operating costs, so it must focus on adding value. Apart from the domestic market, it also exports products to Japan, the US and Europe as an original-equipment manufacturer. The company last year generated revenues of Bt250 million for a 10-per-cent growth rate.
