Two shot dead in deep South

A patrolling Army ranger was killed yesterday in a Yaha district of Yala shooting, escalating tensions in the Muslim-majority region.
Chanant Bounchuay, 30, a ranger of the 4203 unit stationed at Ban Runeng was shot about 6am and died on the way to hospital. A witness said the soldier was walking to a shop when he was shot. The gunman escaped. In Raman district, a construction worker was injured in an afternoon shootout. Prasert Pethuabua was hit three times. Meanwhile, in the early hours of yesterday a Chanae, Narathiwat resident was shot dead as he slept. At least two gunmen sprayed automatic-rifle fire at the home of Amae Paloh, 29. He died instantly while four-year-old son Hanasee Yama was injured, police said. Amae was a witness in the murder of soldier Corporal Yothin Yuthanant who was shot dead on May 2, police added. More than 2,000 people have lost their lives in three years of deep-South insurgency.
