Apai focuses on workplace

Occupational hazards killed 808 workers and injured about 200,000 others last year, according to Labour Minister Apai Chandanachulaka.

The Social Security Office paid out Bt1.7 billion in compensation during the year.

"Overall compensation has been rising for five years," Apai said at a press conference yesterday. The minister said 3,434 workers had lost limbs as a result of occupational injuries in 2006. "Occupational deaths and injuries cause economic and social losses," he said, adding that they can affect the ability of a business.

Labour Protection and Welfare Department director-general Padungsak Thephasadin na Ayudhya said his department would hold a Safety at Workplaces Week at Impact Muang Thong Thani from May 10 to 12. Random inspections at workplaces since last October have found that one-fifth of the sites fail to honour safety-standard requirements, he added.
